Rising to 4,167 metres, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in Morocco and all of North Africa — and summiting it is one of the country’s most rewarding adventures. Just a 90-minute drive from Marrakech, the trek is achievable for any reasonably fit walker and needs no technical climbing skills in summer. This guide explains what the trek is like, how hard it is, and when to go.
The classic trek starts in the Berber village of Imlil in the High Atlas Mountains and climbs through walnut groves, mountain hamlets, and dramatic valleys to a high refuge, before an early-morning push to the summit. The reward is a breathtaking sunrise panorama over the Atlas range and, on clear days, views stretching towards the Sahara. Mules carry the bags, so you only need a daypack.
Toubkal is a challenging but non-technical trek in summer — there is no climbing or ropework, just a long, steep walk at altitude. A good level of fitness helps, as does allowing time to acclimatise, but everyday hikers complete it successfully with a guide. The main challenges are the altitude and the early, steep summit morning. In winter, the route is snow-covered and requires crampons, an ice axe, and mountaineering experience.
Most treks take two to three days: day one climbs from Imlil (1,740 m) to the mountain refuge (around 3,200 m); day two summits at dawn and descends back to Imlil. Longer itineraries add acclimatisation days or extra Berber villages for a deeper mountain experience.
The best season for a non-technical ascent is April to October, when the trails are clear of snow and conditions are most reliable. Late spring and early autumn offer the best balance of stable weather and comfortable temperatures. Winter ascents (November to March) are a serious mountaineering undertaking requiring proper equipment and experience.
Bring sturdy broken-in hiking boots, warm and windproof layers (it is cold at the summit even in summer), a hat and gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headtorch for the pre-dawn start, and a daypack with water and snacks. We provide the guide, mules, and refuge arrangements, and can advise on a full kit list.
The Toubkal trek suits active travellers, hikers, and adventurous first-time trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. It is a fantastic add-on to a Marrakech trip or a wider Morocco tour for those who want to combine culture with a real mountain challenge.
