Morocco Tours Expert is a licensed Marrakech-based tour operator specialising in private Sahara desert tours in Morocco — from camel treks across the golden dunes of Merzouga and Erg Chebbi to luxury desert camps and fully custom desert itineraries, all led by experienced local guides. Whether you dream of riding a camel into the dunes at sunset, sleeping beneath a blanket of stars, or crossing the High Atlas Mountains on an unforgettable road trip, our Morocco desert tours turn the magic of the Sahara into a journey you will never forget.
The Moroccan Sahara is one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. Its centrepiece, the Erg Chebbi dune sea near Merzouga, rises up to 150 metres in waves of orange and gold that shift colour from dawn to dusk. A Sahara desert tour is far more than a camel ride: it is a chance to share mint tea with nomadic families, hear Berber drums echo around a campfire, watch the Milky Way blaze overhead far from any city light, and wake to a silent sunrise over an endless ocean of sand. For most travellers, the night in the desert is the highlight of their entire trip to Morocco.
Most of our desert adventures begin in Marrakech and travel over the Atlas Mountains, through the Dades and Todra gorges, to the dunes of Merzouga or Zagora. Popular options include:
Prefer to start further north? Our Marrakech to Fes desert tours let you experience the Sahara as part of a wider Moroccan journey without backtracking.
Morocco has two main desert gateways, and choosing the right one shapes your whole experience:
Want the dunes entirely to yourself? Our private Sahara desert tours are run just for your group, with a private 4×4, driver-guide, and a flexible itinerary built around your pace.
Every Morocco desert tour is a little different, but most include the same unforgettable ingredients:
The ideal time for a Sahara desert tour is October to April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant (around 20–28°C) and the dunes are comfortable to explore. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the best balance of warm days and cool, starry nights. Summer (June–August) can exceed 45°C at midday, so desert activities are limited to early morning and evening, while winter nights can be cold — pack a warm layer for the camp. Whatever the season, our guides time your camel trek for the cooler, golden hours.
It depends on your starting point and how much you want to see. As a guide: a 2-day tour reaches Zagora; a 3-day tour is the minimum for Merzouga and Erg Chebbi; and 4 days or more lets you slow down, add the Dades and Todra gorges, and avoid long days on the road. Travelling one-way from Marrakech to Fes also takes 3–4 days and lets you see more of Morocco without retracing your route.
We are a local, Morocco-based team — not a faceless booking platform. Every Sahara desert tour we run is 100% private and includes licensed local guides, modern air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles, hand-picked desert camps, and 24/7 support throughout your trip. We tailor each itinerary to your dates, budget, and travel style, whether you are a family, a honeymoon couple, or a group of friends. Tell us what you have in mind and we will design a custom Morocco desert tour just for you.
The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga are roughly a 9–10 hour drive from Marrakech, which is why a Merzouga desert tour usually needs at least 3 days. The Zagora desert is closer, at about 7 hours, and can be visited on a 2-day trip.
October to April offers the most comfortable temperatures. Spring and autumn are ideal, summer middays are very hot, and winter nights are cold but the days remain pleasant and the skies wonderfully clear.
