Tangier’s location makes it a natural entry point to Morocco. Fast ferries cross from Tarifa in Spain in around an hour, and the city’s airport and high-speed rail link it to Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes. Morning: Explore the medina, climbing through its lanes to the Kasbah and the Kasbah Museum, with a stop at the Grand Socco. Pause for mint tea at Cafe Hafa overlooking the sea.
Afternoon: Drive out to Cap Spartel to stand where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, then visit the nearby Caves of Hercules. Return to the city for a seafood dinner along the revitalised marina and corniche.
The medina and Kasbah are best explored on foot, as the streets are steep and narrow. For sights outside the centre such as Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules — about 14 km west of the city — a taxi or private car is needed. Petit taxis are cheap within the city; agree on the meter or a fare first. A private driver-guide is the most comfortable way to combine the city and coastal sights in one day.
The best times to visit Tangier are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is warm and the crowds thinner. Summer is popular for the beaches but busier, while winters are mild and breezy thanks to the coastal setting. Whatever the season, pack a layer for the wind off the strait.
One full day covers the medina, Kasbah, and a coastal excursion to Cap Spartel. Two days lets you add a day trip to Chefchaouen or Asilah and enjoy the city at a slower pace.
