Leave Marrakech in the morning and climb into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka pass with its sweeping views and photo stops. Your first major stop is the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Benhaddou, the famous earthen village seen in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Continue to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Morocco,” then follow the scenic Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the rose-coloured Dades Valley, where you spend the night with a traditional Moroccan dinner.
After breakfast, drive to Tinghir and walk through the palm oasis and the towering Todra Gorge, whose cliffs rise up to 300 metres. Continue east across changing desert scenery to Merzouga and the great Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon, climb aboard a camel for a sunset trek into the sand to reach your desert camp. Enjoy a tagine dinner under the stars, Berber drumming around the campfire, and one of the clearest night skies on earth.
Wake early for the unforgettable desert sunrise over the dunes, then ride your camel back to the auberge for breakfast and a refreshing shower. From here you begin the journey back to Marrakech, retracing the scenic route across the Atlas with stops for photos and lunch.
