Fortified since at least the 11th century, the village is a masterpiece of Moroccan earthen clay architecture, with most of the surviving buildings dating from the 17th century onwards. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, recognised for its outstanding example of a pre-Saharan fortified settlement.

The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when temperatures are comfortable for exploring. Summers are very hot, so early morning visits are essential, while winter days are pleasant but nights are cold. For photography, the soft light of early morning or late afternoon shows the ksar at its most magical.
Two to three hours is enough to explore the ksar itself, including the climb to the granary.
